What your future may hold

As an Associate Financial Regulatory & Transactional Finance you will be joining both the Belgian financial regulatory and the Belgian banking & finance teams, which are part of Freshfields’ wider Global Transactions team. Both the financial regulatory team and the banking & finance team offer holistic services and a comprehensive, cross-border capability, in conjunction with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's other international offices. 

As an Associate Financial Regulatory and Transactional Finance, your main focus will be to work on financial regulatory files, including:

  • Advising a broad range of clients on financial regulatory matters, including fund regulation (AIFMD), DORA, MiFID II, banking, payments and insurance regulation;
  • Representing clients in front of the Belgian financial regulators;
  • Advising on M&A and other transactions in the financial services sector, including qualifying holding procedures;
  • Providing advice to funds and financial institutions on ESG matters.

Next to your financial regulatory focus, you will also have the opportunity to work on various transactional finance files, such as:

  • Representing lenders and borrowers in complex cross border finance transactions;
  • Representing lenders and sponsors on large acquisition finance transactions;
  • Advising our broad corporate and banking client base on a wide range of corporate treasury transactions (including loans, DCM and other product classes such as hedging, cash pooling, etc.);
  • Advising lenders, borrowers and other stakeholders on restructuring and insolvency matters and transactions;
  • A wide variety of other types of finance transactions.

Furthermore, you will

  • Work in a collegiate environment for and with a range of partners and associates from various offices of the firm;
  • Develop relationships with clients including gaining a good knowledge of the client’s businesses, economic drivers, markets and sector in order to ensure advice is relevant and commercial;
  • Work as part of a team and a growing practice and taking an active part in sharing knowledge and experience with the team;
  • Engage in business development activities and being active in the promotion of the firm.

Your skillset

  • You obtained a Belgian Master in Law with strong academic results;
  • You have around 2 to 6 years of experience in the Financial Regulatory and/or Banking & Finance department of a reputable law firm with a special focus on financial regulatory advice; experience with transactional finance is a plus;
  • You demonstrate technical skills in your legal work, with an international awareness and focus to your work;
  • You can build trust and rapport to develop effective relationships, internally and externally;
  • You are service orientated and have a “client first” mindset;
  • You have an excellent command of English and French or Dutch (written and spoken) with a good command of the second national language;
  • You are a team player, you have an entrepreneurial spirit and good communication skills;
  • You respect and enjoy the diversity of cultural, social and academic backgrounds found in the firm.
